I stream the classical music station, KDFC out of San Francisco, while I’m working. It keeps me in touch with my roots as a native Bay Arean. Last week they played movie scores as a lead up to the Oscars. Many of the films and its music are iconic in our culture, from Gone with the Wind to John William’s (of Star Wars and squillions of other scores fame) latest nominations for War Horse and Hugo. This year’s nomination of The Artist harkens back eighty years to the black and white silent movie era. It goes to show that attention to film making fundamentals, telling a good story, and compelling music -everything in the hands of masters – will transcend trends.
Transcending social media trends is what I’ve been thinking about this week. A client recently asked how to choose what social media to use when so many new social media trends keep popping up. I agree. It certainly can be a nightmare IF you don’t stick with the fundamentals of good business.
You Know Why
The first thing is to decide why you want to use social media in the first place. Only if you can answer exactly what you want to accomplish with social media, and why, will social media even be effective for your business over the long haul. It’s not enough to push information about your business out there or to rack up Likes. What is your long-term strategy, how will you measure it, and what is your long-term outcome? Drill down to that level, and you’re ready to select which social media platform is best for your business.
It’s Part of Your DNA
Social media, like networking, must be part of your DNA. That means social media is integrated into the fiber of your business. It’s not an add-on or just another after-thought of marketing. It’s exact role and function is accounted for, implemented, and evaluated. When someone enters your social media realm, you have a plan and process for how that interaction will be shepherded through your social media channel AND how the long-term relationship will be cultivated.
Enjoy the Journey
Using social media is a journey. It’s not a task to check off your to-do list or a destination to say you’ve arrived. Like a journey, you may have planned a route and decided what to do along the way, but the real thrill of the trip is in discovering treasures along the way. The social media journey is likely to yield some unexpected joys along the way. Maybe you embarked on the social media journey with one thing in mind, but you find something completely different and delightful along the way.
Yes, there is a lot of pressure for businesses to jump on the social media trend. Most will opt for the short-term trend and not invest in the w-o-r-k that is [true] social media. Those with the long-view, and the plan to go with it, will find they’re able to access a wonderful world through social media.
