To help you jump start the new year, we’re posting thirty-one technology and business treats, one for each day of January.

Let’s recap what we’ve done so far in looking over your website:

1. Checked every and all clickable areas to make sure the click takes you where you expect to go: navigation, links, email addresses, forms, images.

2. Read through every and all content checking for correct and current information.

3. Enrolled three subjects to observe going through your website. This is usually an eye opener!

Today we’re going to check out your website on other browsers and devices. You probably know what your website looks like on the browser you use and the devices, including mobile devices, you use. But, are you aware of how your site looks like to others on different browsers and devices? I didn’t think so. Time to find out.

Get all of your devices together for a website pow-wow. This usually includes a desktop, laptop, tablet or iPad, and smartphone. Maybe you don’t have or use all of those devices, but someone else in your business or company might. If not, tag some more friends!

Add a column to your spreadsheet for each device. If you’re going for extra credit, add a column for each browser: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera (Opera may not be big in the U.S., but it is in Europe), and Safari.

Go through your ENTIRE website on EACH device. Click, read, fill in, watch (if you have video) … you know the drill.  Record your notes on your spreadsheet.

Extra credit is given for those who also view their website on multiple browsers. Mobile devices use browsers enhanced for the mobile experience, so they’re like a different browser. My Apple devices all come with Safari. My iPad and iPhone have a mobile version of Safari that is optimized for those mobile devices. It’s not the same as the Safari that runs on my MacBook. It’s important to know this because the user experience is different on each device and dependent on what’s being used to run that device.

This is a great activity to do in the afternoon. You may be ready for an adult beverage when you’re finished!
