To help you jump start the new year, we’re posting thirty-one technology and business treats, one for each day of January.
This week we’re going to spend some quality time with your website. What? No website? This will still be worth your time. Some of the actions you can “test” on websites of your own choosing. You can use other actions toward developing your own website. It is our experience that website owners are never involved enough in one of the most important and versatile tools in their business.
Your website is like a machine with lots of moving parts. We can carry this analogy even further by stating that some websites are crafted with high precision parts with attention to details “under the hood” that make it a pleasure to drive – loads quickly, easy to navigate, the links work, the content is clear and readable, users find what they come for. Other websites are functional, but upon driving it, one discovers it takes awhile to load, there is outdated content, some links don’t work, it’s not easy to find what you’re looking for or you’re unsure if what you came to do got done. With billions of websites on the web, there are websites at both ends of the spectrum and everywhere in-between.
Today’s mission is to click on everything clickable on your website. There are two things to look for:
1. Are you taken where you expect to go?
2. Does it work?
Check all of navigation.
Check all links.
Fill in any forms and submit.
Are there email links? Try them out.
Record your findings on a spreadsheet. You will be adding to this spreadsheet through this week. Below is a sample spreadsheet:
