Clean Out Your Readers

To help you jump start the new year, we’re posting thirty-one technology and business treats, one for each day of January.

Have you ever noticed that just when you get a handle on one area of your technology habits, you stumble upon another area that needs some attention? We’ve done a lot of cleaning up in these posts, email, downloads folders, address book, and some real cleaning as in cellphones and computer keyboards. I discovered another area we might as well get cleaned out … readers.

I was sitting down with a nice cup of coffee to go through my Instapaper, the place where I save articles for future reading, usually on my iPad away from my desk. I noticed I had stuff from the beginning of December waiting for my hungry eyes. Ugh. Definitely surpasses my three-day rule. Time to make friends, again, with the Delete button.

Today’s task is to clean out each and every place you collect stuff to read from the web. Some popular ones are Google’s Reader, Safari’s Reader, Instapaper, NetNewsWire, Pulse, Flipboard. Maybe you just bookmark it. You know.

I personally like the three-day rule. If you haven’t read it in three days, there’s a great chance it’s both outdated AND not going to get read. Think of the limits of fish and family and you’ll have a compelling picture to clean it out!

Clicking away the reading clutter is a great way to end the week.
